Hardik Pandya Injury Setback Casts Doubt Over Afghanistan ODI Series Participation
Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya has suffered a fresh injury setback involving a foot niggle, casting doubt over his participation in the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan. Despite being cleared by the BCCI Centre of Excellence, the injury may require weeks of recovery, potentially ruling him out and impacting India’s team balance and World Cup preparations.
Pandya had initially been given clearance to participate in the ODI series following fitness assessments conducted at the Centre of Excellence. He was evaluated after spending time at the facility since June 2, where he underwent comprehensive fitness testing. During the assessment, he participated fully in batting, bowling, and fielding drills and was considered fit for selection.
However, reports have now emerged that Pandya has developed a minor injury, described as a niggle in his foot, which has once again placed his participation in doubt. The injury is believed to require several weeks of recovery, significantly affecting his chances of featuring in the ODI series scheduled to begin on June 13.
According to sources quoted by the news agency IANS, the Centre of Excellence had initially granted Pandya clearance for the Afghanistan ODI series. However, the newly developed injury has altered the situation, with medical advice indicating that he will not be fully match-fit in time for the series and will instead focus on rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence.
Pandya had previously dealt with a back spasm during the Indian Premier League 2026 season, which had already limited his appearances for the Mumbai Indians. The latest setback comes at a crucial time, as he was expected to play an important role in India’s ODI setup.
His absence, if confirmed, would be a significant blow to the Indian team, given his dual role as a batting all-rounder and a key bowling option. Pandya remains an integral part of India’s long-term plans leading into the 2027 Cricket World Cup, making his fitness status a matter of major concern for team management.
The final decision on his participation is expected to depend on further medical evaluation and recovery progress in the coming weeks.
